Year 5 – Week beginning Monday 27th April

Hello Hawthorn and Sycamore,

We are moving to a weekly Year 5 blog post. On this post you will find maths, English and wider curriculum tasks for the week. We suggest you try to complete 3 maths, 3 English and 3 wider curriculum subjects a week. It would be amazing if you could complete all 5 English and maths lessons over the week but now you can make flexible choices which suit your family.

Please keep emailing us (mrs.byfield@wfps.org.uk or miss.taylor@wfps.org.uk ). We love hearing your news and now have a Year 5 Gallery post where we can display your creative work. We will continue to post a daily story; Miss Taylor will read Kensuke’s Kingdom from Monday to Thursday and Mrs Byfield will surprise you on Fridays.

We miss you all but we can see that you are continue to learn in new and creative ways.

Miss Taylor and Mrs Byfield

English

We will be using the English lessons on https://www.thenational.academy/online-classroom/year-5/english/#subjects

Work through the lessons in order as they build over the week. Remember you can always pause the video if you need more time to complete a task.

Maths

We will continue to use White Rose Home Learning. If you have completed week 1 move onto week 2, to continue your work on decimals. If you haven’t completed all the lessons in week 1 start there. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

  • Watch the video.
  • Complete the activity.
  • Check your answers.
  • If you’ve made a mistake can you figure out why?

Spellings

Using your year 5/6 words (there should be a copy in your reading record, your home learning pack but you can also find them online).  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z8mxrwx/articles/z9hjwxs

  • Which words can you add the prefix un-, dis- and mis- to?
  • How does this change the word?
  • Can you use it in a sentence?
  • What are its synonyms?
  • What are its antonyms?

Task 1 – Science

This is an experiment sent in by Rose from Sycamore class and is known as the ‘soap challenge’ on the internet. Give it a try at home and remember, as scientists, to ask yourself these observational questions.

  1. Grab cleansing water and cotton pad (or soap/water and towel).
  2. Put water on cotton pad.
  3. Hold pad close to mouth with both hands firmly.
  4. Blow hard into pad.
  5. See the results!
  • What did you notice?
  • What changed?
  • Why do you think it changed? What was the cause?
  • What reaction has taken place? Is it reversible or irreversible?

Task 2 – Geography – Settlements

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zh2nscw Settlements are places where people live and sometimes work. They can be small or large depending on how many people live there and how many facilities there are. Facilities are places where certain things happen, for example, schools for education, parks for playing or shops for selling things.

  • What different settlements are there?
  • Draw two settlements e.g. Northampton, UK and Northampton, Massachusetts.
  • What is similar about the settlements? What is different?

Task 3 – PSHE – The importance of teamwork

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zdq3bdm

  • How have you used teamwork this week?
  • What makes an amazing team?
  • What teams are you part of?
  • Can you think of a team that inspires you? Why?
  • Why are you an important member of our Hawthorn/Sycamore team?

You have worked so hard this morning! I am glad the experiment worked for you – I wonder if you could send in a photo?
It is great to hear that you are helping out at home. You are right, a singing group is a great place to show team work.

I struggled to get this to work however I can imagine it was an irreversible change because the cotton wool is all fluffy and soft and if it’s wet you can still dry it but it won’t be all fluffy and soft

I noticed that there were bubbles that formed once I blew on it.I think the reason it had worked was because water and soap make bubbles so if you blow on it the bubbles come out.

    What did you notice?
Blowing air through the cotton pad made bubbles.
    What changed?
    The soap turned to bubbles.
    What was the cause?
Air went through different holes to push soap, making bubbles.
    What reaction has taken place?
Air pushed the soap and formed bubbles.
    Is it reversible or irreversible?
I think it is reversible for when the bubbles are left in the cotton pad, they will pop and sink back into it, which means you vanilla bubbles again.

Thank you for commenting on the blog – it is so lovely to hear from you! I am so pleased to hear you have been able to access all the lessons online.
If you are looking for some more activities to do there are lots of foundation lessons on Oak National Academy or the daily lessons on bitesize.
Also you could challenge yourself to solve the White Rose Problem of the day? https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/classroom-resources/problems/page/4/
Or the 5-a-day challenges you enjoy on https://corbettmaths.com/5-a-day/primary/
Both have answer pages if you want to check your workings.

I wonder what teamwork skills they need which enables them to score so many goals…that was the hardest sentence I have ever had to write!

I bet you are being a huge help at home!

    8. Whitney is correct because she added up 50/100 and 18/1000 and 18/1000 to make 536/1000, 18/1000+18/1000=36/1000 and then 50/100 turns into 500/1000 so they are all the same denominater. Then you add 36/1000 and 500/1000 to make 536/1000. I made another one, 12/100+12/1000+12/1000+40/100=536/1000.

I drew two settlements and answered the questions correctly.
    These where my answers
1 There are 4 types of settlements city, town ,village, and a hamlet.
2 The one of the differences is that Northampton UK has a famous river and the Northampton MA is located on a beautiful hilltop destination.

    English:- Comprehensions questions
    1) Round doors and Round windows
    2) There were loads of hats and coat pegs because ths hobbit was fond of visitors.
    3) The tunnel would lead to panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted.
    4) The left hand side had the best rooms for going in and they are the only rooms that have windows, deep – set round windows.
    5) False, false, True, true
    6) The author used the word ‘porthole’ to define the hobbit – hole
    7) I got all the spellings right except from comfortable instead I wrote ‘comfartable’.After I checked it I realised it was ment to be ‘or’.

Maths:- White Rose Maths – Lesson 4

    1a) 5.321
    1b) 1.734
    1c) 0.357

    2a) 0.512 = 0 wholes, 5 tenths, 1 hundredth, 2 thousandths
    1.352 = 1 whole, 3 tenths, 5 hundredths, 2 thousandths
    2.003 = 2 wholes, 0 tenths, 0 hundredths, 3 thousandths
    2b) 0.512 = 0.5 + 0.01 + 0.002
    1.352 = 1 + 0.3 + 0.05 + 0.002
    2.003 = 2 + 0.003

3a) It is called a thousand square because the square is split into 1000 squares
    3b) 113/1000
    3c) 0.113

    4a) 371/1000 = 0.371
    4b) 502/1000 = 0.502

5a) You need to colour 73 little retangles
5b) You need to colour in 302 retangles

    6) Please see below attched picture of Value chart.

    7) I know 400/1000 is the same as 0.4 because you have to divide by 10. From 400/1000 it goes to 40/100 to 4/10 or 0.4. To get to this point you have to keep dividng by 10.

    8a) 4.276
    8b) 0.504

Task 1 :- Science – I have completed the experiments
I notice that when I was blowing hard there were noises and the water to drip. T
The cotton pad changed bacause now it was thin.
After the experiment I thought that the cotton pad’s water was all gone.
te cause was that I was blowing and putting pressure to hold the cotton pad firmly.
I know it was a irreversible change because you can’t get all the water out again eventhough you let it dry.

Task 2 – Geography – settlements (please see below attched Settlements pics)
There are many settlements like villages, towns, hamlets, and cites
The similar things about different settlements are facilities like university, hospital, school and shopping centres, ect
The difference is that how many people live there and if every place had the the same amount of people there would be no differences.

Task 3 – PSHE – The importance of teamwork
I have used teamwork this team by gardening and to help make pizzas
To make an amazing team you have to share ideas to make something new together.
I am part of helping my mum and spending time with my family – These are the teame I am part of.
I think my dad inspires me because we go well as a team. He inspires me to be an artist.
I think I am a important member of sycamore because when everyone works as a team there is a lot that can be done. Just having 1 person, there won’t be great ideas.

Pics have emailed to you Mrs Byfiled.
