Dear Year 5
It sounds like you have had a great week’s learning and we hope you are looking forward to your long weekend celebrating VE day.
Do send us an email if you haven’t contacted us yet. We love to hear about your home learning and we will send you a reply!
Here is a video with a recipe for VE day meringues. I will add a photo of the finished meringues later when they come out of the oven. Do have a think about the scientific reaction which is taking place when you whisk egg whites. What are they combining with? (Clue: it’s all around us). Is the change reversible or irreversible? Has something new been created?
The recipe is 3 egg whites and 175g of caster sugar.
Whisk egg whites until stiff.
Whisk in the sugar a tablespoon at a time until it has dissolved and you have a glossy mixture with no grains.
Spoon onto a lined baking sheet – either 1 large pavlova or individual meringues. Bake at 140 degrees or Gas Mark 2 for an hour. Leave in the oven until completely cold.
Enjoy with cream and summer fruits. Remember you can make Eton Mess if the meringues break!
