Year 5 Home Learning Week Beginning 29.6.20

Hello Year 5,

Here is your online learning for the week. Once again, there are 5 English and Maths lessons to complete and 5 tasks linking to the wider curriculum.

We have really enjoyed our video calls with you this week! We’ve missed seeing you all. Next week look out for an invitation to a call with your new teacher for Year 6.

Please email miss.taylor@wfps.org.uk or mrs.byfield@wfps.org.uk to let us know how you have got on with your learning this week.

Below is a pair of tasks. The first task in each pair encourages you to explore, play with some maths, and make discoveries for yourself. The second task then gives you the chance to use what you have found out in a new situation.

These activities will give you opportunities to work on all five key ingredients that make a successful mathematician: understanding, skills, problem solving, reasoning and attitude. To find out more about these five ingredients and suggestions about how you can reflect on becoming a better mathematician, take a look at our short article What Makes a Good Mathematician?.

Extra English

With the Premier League returning to our screens, I thought some of you might enjoy these football activities assigned by Tom Palmer – the author of Football Academy series and Roy of the Rover series – https://royoftheroversofficial.com/shop/free

Practise your reading and answer comprehension questions – https://readtheory.org/

Complete one of the quizzes on – https://www.spag.com/

Pictures with questions to answer and writing ideas – https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/

Task 1 – Science

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-is-static-electricity

This week, we are moving onto the topic of electricity – what is static electricity? If you have a balloon at home, you can complete your own experiment to create static charges!

Task 2 – History Medieval Monarchs

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-did-henry-viii-initiate-the-reformation

This week we move onto learning about Henry VIII – one of the most famous English Kings. We will learn about how Henry changed the official religion of England from Catholicism to Protestantism in order to get his way…clue, this might have something to do with his SIX wives.

I wonder if you can discover the simple rhyme about his wives and email it to us?

Task 3 – Geography – Sustainability

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-is-sustainability

This would have been our topic in school this term – it is such a vital subject.

Afterwards, have a think about your daily life with your family – could you make some little changes which make a big difference for the future e.g. recycling, using less plastic, buying local produce.

Task 4 – Creative Outdoor Task

Make a journey stick

https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/24032020_Journey-sticks-reader-friendly.pdf

The weather is going to be wonderful this week, so why not plan a walk with your family and complete this activity – a way to be mindful during your walk and reflect on it later. You might like to send us photos of your journey sticks for us to tweet or put on the blog.

Time to put those screens down and enjoy sunshine and nature!

Task 5 – PE

It’s tennis this week, but you might like to choose one of the previous week if it appeals to you more!

Good morning, Klea. Well done for working so hard. I find Henry VIII interesting too. Did you find the mnemonic (word pattern) to help remember his wives, or their fate? Mrs Bacon 🙂

      Hi Aiyana,
I will let the Year 5 teachers know you would like to do some computing. In the meantime, you could have a go on scratch.mit.edu and explore some of the games there.

Thanks for the suggestion! We will factor it into next week’s blog.
There are some really interesting lessons in the Computing section of BBC Bitesize if you’d like to look there too.
